Our Intent
The intent of our curriculum for Art and Design at Lacock Primary School is to develop creativity, set challenges, engage and inspire children and equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We aim to enable pupils to create artwork with a real purpose when displaying and sharing the work they create and showcasing the skills and progress they have made.
Our art and design curriculum aims to ensure that all children:
Implementation
To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in art and design, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. We have created our own separate knowledge and skills progression documents focussing on the progress that children will make within the themes of drawing, painting, printing, textiles, sculpture/3D art and collage as they move through the school. Art and design is taught as part of a termly topic, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum and our own.
When teaching art and design, teachers follow the children’s interests to ensure their learning is engaging, broad and balanced. A variety of teaching approaches are used based on the teacher’s judgement addressing the knowledge and skills documents.
Displaying and sharing the work they create (showcasing their skills and progress) enables pupils to create artwork with a real purpose. We want our pupils to be aware of different artists (from a variety of cultures, genres and races) and know that it’s good to have unique and individual styles; this will provide opportunities for inspiration and discussion. We want our children to understand that art can be a powerful form of personal expression.
Impact
· Art and design learning is loved by teachers and pupils across school.
· They are always keen to learn new skills and work hard to perfect those shown to them.
· Teachers have high expectations and quality evidence can be presented in a variety of ways.
· The children’s art is cross-curricular, and helps them to express feelings and emotions in art, as well as show their knowledge and understanding in humanities.
· All children use technical vocabulary accurately and pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified.
· Children will become more confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion on their own and other works of art.
· Children show competences in improving their resilience and perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their work.
· Classroom displays reflect the children’s sense of pride in their artwork and this is also demonstrated by creative outcomes across the wider curriculum.
· The school environment also celebrates children’s achievements in art and demonstrates the subject’s high status in the school, with outcomes, including sculptures, enhancing the outdoor as well as indoor environment.
